Kohli scores brilliant century to leave first Test finely poised

Grant SmithAug 03, 2018

Joe Root saw the amusing side of Virat Kohli's exuberant celebrations after being run out by the India captain on the opening day of the Test series at Edgbaston.

The day began with India just one wicket away from cleaning up England.

287 allout in 89.4 overs (J Root 80; R Ashwin 4/62, M Shami 3/64).

It was Kohli at his most brilliant and daring, when he departed for 149, caught at cover off the bowling of Rashid, he had got India to only 13 runs behind England's total, and scored over half his side's runs.

However, he has often been criticised for attempting too many variations, especially in tougher conditions such as Australia, England and South Africa, when wickets have not been forthcoming as they have in the subcontinent.

It was the second time in the match that Ashwin had dismissed Cook, England's all-time leading Test run-scorer, this way.

Buttler was injured diving to his left at gully in an attempt to catch Kohli off Anderson, the ball appearing to clip his fingertip, though in a boost for England he was cleared of any major damage. However, Virat Kohli raced after the ball, picked it up, swivelled and got the throw back to collect the stumps direct. Joe Root was stranded, England lost their fourth wicket and a collapse started.

For India, star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took four wickets while Mohammad Shami took two wickets.

Thanks to Kohli, India were eventually dismissed for 274 - for a first-innings deficit of 13 runs - having been 3-59, 5-100 and 7-169 at various stages.

A son of the late Zimbabwe all-rounder Kevin Curran and brother of England paceman Tom, he added it had been an education to bowl to Kohli.

Two more Indian batsmen departed, with Ben Stokes taking the wickets of Ajinkya Rahane (15) and Dinesh Karthik (0) in consecutive overs, but Kohli just about survived.

Kohli finally fell to Rashid, cutting a short and wide delivery to Stuart Broad but the job was already done.

But Curran returned to have Pandya lbw for 22 with an inswinging yorker. Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan looked at ease as they got to 50 without breaking much of a sweat. It was a surface that actually did a bit all day, There was seam movement at the back end of the day, and that fills our bowlers with confidence.

But the introduction of Curran turned the tide in England's favour.

Virat dedicated his hundred to his wife Anushka Sharma, and celebrated it with a loud "come on", Kohli then held out his wedding ring that hung around his neck, showed it to the world, and kissed it to show his delight.

Earlier, Curran had taken three wickets in the space of eight balls to reduce India to 76-3 at lunch.
