Osama bin Laden's mum claims he was 'brainwashed' into 9/11

Another of Bin Laden's brothers, Ahmad, later explained that his mother had never come to terms with the fact that her son was responsible for one of the single-largest massacres in history.

"He was a very good kid and he loved me so much... my life was very hard because he was so far away from me", she said.

"She loved him so much and refuses to blame him".

Ghanem, who lives in a mansion in a wealthy area of Jeddah, said he was a deeply religious individual who "changed" at university.

He also said his mother remains "in denial" about Bin Laden 17 years on from the 9/11 attacks, instead blaming the people around him. "He was a good man, and he was good to Osama", said the lady as she sat in her palatial house in Jeddah. "I politely waited and I called on you even after you interrupted me when I called on your colleague", she chided the CNN reporter. "You can call it a cult", she said.

"It was a place near the airport that they had captured from the Russians", Ghanem said.

Hassan said: 'I don't want to go through that again. "Why would he throw it all away like that?" she says.

Ms Ghanem was interviewed along with bin Laden's two half-brothers and the man who raised all three children, Mohammed al Attas.

The rise of Hamza bin Laden, Osama's youngest child who has reportedly taken his father's mantle in Afghanistan, may well cloud the family's attempts to shake off their past.

After the 9/11 attacks, the family say they were interrogated by the Saudi government who then limited their travel and movement. "He became a different man", narrating how bin Laden had met Abdullah Azzam, a Muslim Brotherhood member, who became his spiritual adviser, at the university. He was killed by USA special forces in Pakistan in 2011. "At the start, we were very proud of him", he said.

"The Guardian quotes experts as saying that Bin Laden had "deliberately" decided that the majority of the 9/11 attacks that targeted the United States in 2001 - and consequently changed the whole world - to be Saudi citizens" as he was "convinced that [this was] going to turn the West against his. home country". Think twice about what you are doing.

Bin Laden's mother allowed herself to be photographed for The Guardian story, which is surprising because the photography of women's faces in Saudi Arabia is still not common.

In January it was reported that Hamza bin Laden's 12-year-old son was killed in an airstrike along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border sometime in 2017. "You are entering awful parts of your soul.'" said Hassan in a visible gesture of not being aligned with the heir of OBL. "We don't like the idea of allowing people into our country if we don't know who they are, where they're going, and why they're coming". "Our family overseas all came back to Saudi", Ahmad told the newspaper.
