Alps plane crash: 20 feared dead after sightseeing flight smashes into mountain

Howard TerryAug 05, 2018

Police have given few details but have confirmed the crash, saying the aircraft came down on a mountainside about 2,540m (8,333 ft) above sea level. Most of the people killed were from Switzerland, along with an Austrian couple and their son.

The German-built Junker JU52 HB-HOT aircraft, dating from 1939 and nickamed "Iron Annie", was a collectors' aircraft.

Ju-Air, which offers flights from Junkers Ju-52 planes, said one of its vehicles was involved in the incident.

The 20 Minutes newspaper quoted a witness who was on the mountainside at the time of the crash.

On Sunday, Swiss officials said they were unaware that any distress call had been sent out from the plane, and said they expected the investigation into the cause to be "relatively complex".

The Swiss daily Blick said the planes can accommodate 17 passengers and three crew.

The company's flight operations were suspended, it said.

The plane was operated by JU-Air, an association set-up to keep the planes flying after they were taken out of service by the Swiss Air Force in 1981. It was used as a military transport plane as well as a bomber during World War II.

The airline posteda statement online: "We have the sad duty to announce that one of our Ju-52 aircraft had an accident today".

Earlier on Saturday, a small plane carrying two parents and their two children crashed in the nearby canton of Nidwalden.
