Newcastle set to unveil Rondon on Monday

Grant SmithAug 06, 2018

Newcastle United are allegedly close to securing a deal for West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon.

Their return to the Premier League came thanks to the astute managerial skills of Rafael Benitez, who managed to deliver a net surplus of over £40m in transfer fees while securing promotion.

News of the Muto signing being finalised comes after Benitez was quoted by The Chronicle after Wednesday night's 4-0 friendly loss at Braga that he was "really worried" about transfers.

Talks broke down between the two clubs, with Newcastle keen on Rondon but were unable to spend the £16 the Baggies are demanding due to Mike Ashley's tight pockets.

Sam Allardyce has warned Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez that he is playing a risky game by publicly criticising his clubs owner for his lack of backing in the transfer market.

He is now entering the final year of his contract on Tyneside and is refusing to sign the new deal Ashley has offered him until assurances over transfer budget and improvements to the under-23 set up, academy and training ground are met.

Benitez claimed he wanted three or four more players.

Newcastle have already signed Japanese forward Yoshinori Muto from Mainz and are still in the market for a striker, with Rondon believed to be a top target.

Switzerland defender Fabian Schar and South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-yueng have also arrived, while Chelsea midfielder Kenedy has returned on a season-long loan deal after impressing during a six-month spell last campaign.

Information from The Associated Press and Reuters was used in this report.

A hard-working and popular member of the squad, Ings nonetheless saw his game time at Liverpool restricted once more last season. "But I can't say too much".
