Jordan backs James after president questions player's intelligence

Grant SmithAug 07, 2018

According to NBC News, Jordan released a statement through a spokesperson that said, "I support LJ. He's doing an awesome job for his community", the Chicago Bulls legend said.

Trump happened to see the interview on Friday, and the president blasted both James and Lemon in a tweet posted just before midnight.

"Just as she always has, the First Lady encourages everyone to have an open dialogue about issues facing children today", she said.

Earlier this week, James told CNN during an interview with Don Lemon that sport had offered him the opportunity to meet people of different backgrounds and race. Perhaps Trump's tweet was an attempt for Trump to get back at LeBron, but that came with much backlash from the sports community.

Mrs. Trump has stood apart from her husband's views before. "A man who puts kids in classrooms or one who puts kids in cages?"

Mr Lemon, the presenter who interviewed James, also got Mrs Trump involved. In 2013, Trump tweeted that he thought James was a "great player and a great guy", and sent another congratulating the National Basketball Association star on winning at the ESPYS.

OH governor Josh Kasich, a Republican who has been critical of Mr Trump, tweeted: "Rather than criticizing @KingJames, we should be celebrating him for his charity work and efforts to help kids". He said the school prioritised a holistic experience for students that include sports, which he described as critical for healthy communities. In addition to talking about the school, James talked about how Trump is using athletics and athletes to divide the country.

The I Promise School is the culmination of almost a decade of work by James' foundation, with its focus on educating children from challenging situations and backgrounds.

The first lady's platform, "Be Best", is all about encouraging children to conduct themselves in an honorable manner, and she has made promoting children's welfare a key piece of her time in the White House.

That suggests Trump was referring to Jordan at the end of his tweet.

Prior to Buss, Jordan also voiced his support of James.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe tweeted: "It should be beneath the dignity of a sitting POTUS to take racist shots at D. Lemon and Lebron James".

James, for his part, in his first comment since the insult, tweeted a celebration of his new school instead of responding directly to Trump. But James has been outspoken about the president's policies, once calling him a "bum" for disinviting the Golden State Warriors to the White House.
