Ohio State's Meyer: I 'failed' in denying prior knowledge about fired assistant

Grant SmithAug 07, 2018

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer insisted Friday he followed proper protocols in reporting domestic violence allegations against an assistant coach in 2015, passionately defending himself in his first extensive comments since he was put on paid leave amid a university investigation. He was also asked about a 2015 incident alleged by Courtney Smith, who also said she told Meyer's wife about those incidents.

"I wasn't a great husband", Zach Smith said in the radio interview.

Courtney Smith, the ex-wife, says coaches knew of the allegations. I know nothing about it.

"I failed on many of these fronts".

Meyer denied any intention to deceive in the statement released on his Twitter account, saying that he, "was not adequately prepared to discuss these sensitive personnel issues with the media".

He said Gene Smith was alerted by police about the 2015 allegations. But Smith was only fired on July 23 after an OH court granted Courtney Smith a domestic violence protective order.

To ESPN's Dan Murphy on Friday afternoon, Smith said, "I told (Meyer), 'Courtney is accusing me that I committed domestic violence. I always said it, but when you're five years old you say it, and people laugh, and you go back to playing with Legos". I volunteered to do that. "It got investigated twice and no charges came about because I didn't do anything physically to harm her". I didn't ever hit her.' He said, 'If you ever hit her, you are fired immediately.' I looked at him and said, 'If I hit her, I wouldn't come in here. I knew exactly what he did.

When Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith was sacked in the wake of a May criminal trespass charge and a following domestic violence civil order filed against him by his ex-wife Courtney, his lawyer said Smith wasn't going to talk outside of court.

He also told Murphy that Coach Urban Meyer had known about a 2009 "incident" with his wife, but that Meyer had not gotten involved, instead choosing to "let due process run its course".

Meyer took the helm at Ohio State, one of the country's winningest programs, from Luke Fickell, a longtime Ohio State assistant who ascended to the top job for a year after the once-heralded championship coach Jim Tressel resigned. That's who he is right there. And Friday morning, per ESPN's Edward Acshoff, they announced the six-person group who will lead the investigation.

Smith maintained his innocence, saying he has never been charged by police in OH and that nothing he did warrants it.

"Now u continue ur lies", Courtney Smith said. Murphy asks if Meyer should have looked further and Smith said "No, he's not an investigator, he's not a cop, he's not a detective". I told Shelley. I sent her some pictures.

"I'm so sorry! Zach Smith said".

"Given that Ohio State's playing Oregon State in four weeks, I think that there's an urgency to get stuff done either way before a football game", Wasserman said. In the meantime, what do you think happens to Meyer? I was at all the meetings, I knew exactly what he knew. I pushed her buttons a lot, I knew how to get her going. He said he would address questions in a public forum "at the appropriate time". "I did not know specifics, and I knew the matter was in the hands of university personnel and that the couple was involved in counseling".
