Saudi airline stops flights to Canada amid escalating diplomatic row

Infographic KSA, a Saudi verified Twitter account that has more than 35,000 followers and another 88,000 on Instagram, tweeted on Monday an image that showed an Air Canada airplane heading toward Toronto's CN Tower.

A Twitter account linked to the Saudi government posted an image showing a plane flying towards the skyline in Toronto.

In response, Saudi Arabia - which has received $89 billion in arms from the United States in the past decade - expelled the Canadian ambassador and vowed to shut down all trade with the largest English-speaking country on earth.

Last week, Canada's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concerns over the arrests of seven Saudi civil society activists.

"We must stand with Saudi Arabia as it defends its leadership and laws".

The Saudi foreign ministry ordered Canada's ambassador, Dennis Horak, to leave the country and called the use of "immediately release" in Canada's tweet "unfortunate, reprehensible, and unacceptable in relations between states".

Here's how we got there: While we've been digesting the news that Saudi Arabia has been using USA aid in Yemen and making alliances with Osama Bin Laden's weak-but-intact terror franchisees, the Saudis got into a fight with our neighbors to the north over women's rights - specifically, whether to have any.

Freeland late on Monday also tweeted an official statement saying that Canada would "continue to advocate for human rights and for the courageous women and men who push for these fundamental rights around the world".

Ms Badawi's brother was arrested in 2012 for criticism of the regime, and was subjected to 50 lashings in 2015.

Thomas Juneau, an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa, said it is hard to determine what the economic impact on Canada would be without specifics on which trade deals will be affected.

Momani called it, "getting tough on Canada", which she said other countries in the region might welcome if they view Canadian foreign policy to be led by human rights concerns.

But the damage could be more significant if a $15 billion deal agreed in 2014 for Canada to sell Riyadh light armoured vehicles is scrapped, as thousands of jobs in Canada could be lost, Juneau said.

There could be a sentiment among allies that, "Finally the Trudeau government is getting poked back in the eye by the Saudis".

Amnesty International noted Ms Badawi has been repeatedly targeted and interrogated by Saudi security forces for her human rights activist.

When asked about the contract, Freeland said the government "looks forward" to hearing from Riyadh about the future of the deal.
