OH race too close to call, but Trump claims victory

Howard TerryAug 08, 2018

A number of races on both sides have several candidates from which to choose, including five persons running for Kansas governor on the Democratic side and seven persons running on the Republican side. Republicans were only able to win a once safe district by spending millions in outside money and an election eve visit from Trump. Polls close at 7 p.m. That's enough for O'Connor to potentially pick up enough votes to force a recount.

Donald Trump has claimed victory for the Republican candidate in a hotly-contested OH election, saying his visit to the state helped him come from behind to defeat a tough challenge from his Democrat rival.

Republican Troy Balderson may have narrowly eked out a win in Ohio's 12th congressional district over Danny O'Connor, but the victory came at a steep price.

If you intend to vote in today's primary, you will need to either already be registered as a Republican or Democrat or declare a party affiliation at the polling place. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Bronx/Queens) saw their chosen Michigan Democratic gubernatorial-primary candidate, Abdul El-Sayed, lose.

Also in the race: Native American attorney Sharice Davids and former school teacher Tom Niermann.

Balderson said simply that it was an honor and "incredible" to appear with and be supported by the president. "I want to see someone who's interested in working with the other party so we can actually get something done". So, as Republicans like Ohio Gov. John Kasich - a vocal critic of Trump - pointed out prior to Election Day, the sheer fact that the race is so close should strike fear in the hearts of GOP operatives.

Mr O'Connor and his Democratic allies have railed against the tax plan, casting it as a giveaway for the rich that exacerbates federal deficits and threatens Medicare and Social Security.

O'Connor has dominated Balderson on the local airwaves.

According to data obtained by TIME, Balderson had only spent $507,206 on television ads as of August 3, while O'Connor had spent over $2 million.

The special election will fill the seat vacated by Rep. Patrick Tiberi (R), who is retiring. The field includes Fayrouz Saad, who would be the first Muslim woman in Congress.

There are dozens of Republican-held seats more favourable to Democrats across the country than Ohio's 12th district, a predominantly rural and suburban seat previously held by the state's moderate Republican Governor John Kasich.

In the MI governor's race, progressive favorite Abdul El-Sayed, the 33-year-old former Detroit health official vying to become the nation's first Muslim governor, faces former state Senate Democratic leader Gretchen Whitmer, who is considered the favorite in the race. "He will win BIG in Nov".

Conservative election analyst Henry Olsen predicted on Hill.TV's "What America's Thinking" on Monday that impeachment hearings against Trump will happen if Democrats take back the House and Senate in November. State Attorney General Bill Schuette won the GOP nomination.

Hours before polls opened, Trump again weighed in on Twitter, casting James as "a potential Republican star".
