Ruby Rose Cast as "Batwoman" on The CW

The announcement comes after CW reportedly made casting an openly gay actress for the role of Batwoman a priority.

Her character is described in a CW release as a "highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence". But don't call her hero yet.

Ruby Rose (left) will play Batwoman Kate Kane for The CW's Arrowverse shows, including her own series that's in the works. The crossover events began with "Flash vs. Arrow" in 2014 and the last multi-show storyline "Crisis on Earth-X" premiered past year. As the BBC reported in July, she's since become the "the highest-profile openly gay character of any DC comic". "Over time, inspired by Gotham's most famous vigilante, Kate finds a new way to fight for justice under the guise of Batwoman". On TV, Batwoman first appeared in animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which premiered on Cartoon Network in 2008.

Following an upcoming crossover, Rose's Batwoman will join their ranks.

A stand-alone series about Batwoman, whose real name is Kate Kane, is in development for the 2019-20 TV season. She next appears in The Meg. Of note is the fact that Rose is an out lesbian playing the notably lesbian superhero.

Unlike Kathy, who was mostly featured in books alongside other members of the Bat Family, Kate has enjoyed some memorable solo runs.

The DC shows air on Sky in New Zealand. We're eager to see her take on the character, and hopefully see her shine in her own series soon. It's written by Marguerite Bennett, with pencils by Fernando Blanco, Steve Epting, and Stephanie Hans.

Rose pursued a career in acting from 2008 onwards, with her debut performance in the Australian film Suite for Fleur.

Batwoman's entrance into the Arrowverse will also bring Gotham City to its TV universe, but there are no plans to bring an adult Batman to the small screen.
