Baby boy dies after being found in river near Brooklyn Bridge

Police say the body of a baby boy was found in the water near the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan Sunday afternoon.

A family visiting from Oklahoma spotted the baby wearing only diapers in the shallow water near the Manhattan shoreline on Sunday at about 4pm. It is not yet clear how long the baby boy had been in the water, but Campbell noted there was a backpack floating in the water near the child.

The parents have not been found. "911, they put me on hold and at that point I decided I had to go make sure".

The baby, later determined to be about 8 months old, was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officers tried CPR but the child was unresponsive.

Police climbed over the safety railing to retrieve the baby, then brought him to the pedestrian walkway where they performed CPR, officials said. The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner. They say the baby was suffering no obvious signs of trauma when he was first spotted.

Diana Campbell, a professional photographer and owner of Dream Image Photography in Stillwater, told local media she took pictures and videos of the infant because, as she was quoted saying, "Someone knows that child". She said the baby was floating about 30 feet offshore.

The Campbell family left around 6 p.m., with Monte Campbell calling the experience "very emotional".
