Hurricane Hector is headed toward Hawaii, where a volcano is erupting

Ismael LynchAug 09, 2018

As of 8 p.m. ET Sunday, Hector was located about 1,130 miles east-southeast of South Point, Hawaii, with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph moving west at 14 mph.

The storm was about 1,390 miles southeast of the Hawaiian islands, and it was uncertain if it would hit or just brush by the southern edge of the Big Island by Wednesday, said a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park Maryland.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center forecasts that Hector will continue to travel toward the WNW at an increased forward speed through Tuesday, followed by a westward motion Tuesday night through Friday. The National Hurricane Center continues to indicate that Hector will enter the Central Pacific later today and reach the local region around the islands around the Wednesday time period.

Deanna Marks, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service's Hilo office, told emergency workers this morning at Civil Defense headquarters in Hilo that there is a 33 percent chance Hector will bring tropical storm force winds of between 39 and 73 miles per hour to South Point.

The Center said high surf and rip currents will be the main threat on beaches and some bands of heavier rain would hit the islands.

The US National Hurricane Centre said storms of this strength are considered capable of causing devastating damage to populated areas.

State officials urged residents to take precaution and prepare for the storm.

The Hawaiian Islands include Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and the island of Hawaii, which is often referred to as the Big Island.

So far, Kilauea's eruption has been ongoing for 93 days straight and more than two dozen volcanic fissures have opened up.

A tropical storm watch is in effect Monday for waters south of the Big Island.
