Iranian lawmakers oust minister in victory for hard-liners

Howard TerryAug 09, 2018

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump wrote on social media that "anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States".

'We still think that it is a mistake to give up on the nuclear accord with Iran, ' Maas said in an interview with the daily Passauer Neue Presse.

Anti-government demonstrations have spread across the country in recent months, from Iran's heartland to dozens of cities, including the capital of Tehran, as citizens grow increasingly disillusioned by the weak economy, strict Islamic laws, and chronic drought. Fueling calls for regime change, Iranian security forces have killed several demonstrators, including at least two protesters who suffered fatal gun wounds over the weekend.

Critics accused him of mismanagement and blamed him for the country's recent economic problems, which have been exacerbated by the restoration of USA sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear agreement.

"The Iran sanctions have officially been cast".

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was cited by an Iranian newspaper, as saying that a U.S. plan to stop Iranian oil exports will not succeed.

He described the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and re-imposition of sanctions against Iran as a wrong action which runs contrary to worldwide regulations.

On Tuesday, the United States reinstated sanctions targeting the Iranian government's purchase of United States dollars, Iran's trade in gold and other precious metals, and its automotive sector.

The first batch of sanctions was snapped back on Monday, August 6.

Just one day after the U.S. issued their first set of sanctions were issued, Ms Mogherini said: "We are doing our best to keep Iran in the deal, to keep Iran benefiting from the economic benefits that the agreement brings to the people of Iran, because we believe this is in the security interests of not only our region but also of the world".

The first wave of USA sanctions took effect on Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday a blocking statute aimed at protecting European Union firms took effect.

The chief executive of reinsurance group Munich Re said it may abandon its Iran business under pressure from the United States, but described the operation as very small.

Already facing broad economic fallout as their currency implodes, Iranians are wondering how the next phase of the crisis in USA relations will play out - and what, exactly, America's long-term strategy is toward their country.

Boris Johnson, who was Britain's foreign secretary when Trump removed the US from the pact in May, highlighted that the United Kingdom and other European countries viewed the nuclear deal "as vital for our shared security" and were "fully committed to upholding it".
