Dozens killed, including children on a bus, in Yemen air strikes

Howard TerryAug 10, 2018

"The air strikes targeted a bus full of school students in the middle of Dahyan market in Saada province while they were going to their school", the official said.

The coalition says it carried out a "legitimate military action", targeting a bus in response to a deadly missile attack on Saudi Arabia on Wednesday by Huthi rebels.

Images broadcast by Houthi media showed scores of bloody children, some still wearing their backpacks as they were loaded onto stretchers. This action is in conformity with the humanitarian law, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted Col.

It said the air strike was aimed at missile launchers used to attack the southern Saudi city of Jizan on Wednesday, where a Yemeni civilian was killed.

"The secretary general condemns the airstrike today by the coalition forces in Sa'ada, which hit a busy market area in Majz district and impacted a bus carrying children from a summer camp", Farhan Haq, the United Nations chief's deputy spokesman, said in a statement on Thursday.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) denounced American military aid to Saudi Arabia following reports of a devastating airstrike on a Yemeni school bus on Thursday.

"We call on the Saudi-led coalition to conduct.an investigation", Nauert said.

"Putting children in harm's way is horrific and deplorable and making them pay such a price is unacceptable", she said.

Yemenis helps a wounded child after being injured in an alleged Saudi-led airstrike, at a hospital in the northern province of Saada.

It accused the Houthis of using children as human shields.

"This is yet another example of the blatant violations of worldwide humanitarian law that we have seen in Yemen over the past three years-from indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks on civilians, denial of access to humanitarian aid and the use of starvation as a weapon of war-it's the people of Yemen, not the warring parties, who are paying the ultimate price", said Sylvia Ghaly, director of advocacy in Yemen for Save the Children.

Global aid groups were quick to condemn the air strike.

Saudi Arabia and some of its allies have been fighting in Yemen for more than three years against the Houthis, a rebel group who control much of north Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, and drove a Riyadh-backed government into exile in 2014.

The coalition said the projectile, fired toward the southwestern Saudi city of Jizan, was intercepted and destroyed.

The coalition denied responsibility for those attacks.

The Yemen war has killed more than 10,000 people, displaced more than two million and driven the country to the verge of starvation, according to the United Nations.

"It is beyond cruel; innocent children's lives have been lost".

The U.N. special envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, has been pushing to bring the warring parties to restart peace talks.
