Manchester United fail with Diego Godin approach

Grant SmithAug 10, 2018

Godin was heading into the final year of his contract at Atletico and United hoped to trigger the release clause in his contract, which is believed to be around £18m.

Now that the Godin deal has fallen through, it looks like United won't be signing any new central defenders before this evening's 5pm deadline - a position Jose Mourinho has seen as a priority to strengthen.

A report claims that Atletico Madrid centre-back Diego Godin is a deadline-day target for Manchester United, who have made contact with the Spanish club.

Obviously Godin would be a superb short-term addition if United were able to pull it off but it's looking highly unlikely unless things take a drastic change over the next couple of hours. However, Godin has chose to snub the offer in favour of a stay at the Wanda Metropolitano. But Uruguay's signing can be a great news for the fans as he is considered as one of the best defender's in La Liga.

Manchester United want a new defender. However, the 121-time capped Uruguayan global feels settled in the Spanish capital and enjoys an excellent relationship with his current boss Simeone, which has led to him rejecting the English giants' overtures.

In his press conference ahead of Friday's season opener against Leicester City, the Portuguese did not sound optimistic about his club's chances of signing anyone before the transfer window slams shut.

At the time United were themselves scrambling around to get a deal for either Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Jerome Boateng or Yerry Mina over the line, without any success.
