North Korea chides U.S. for pressing sanctions

Howard TerryAug 10, 2018

North Korea on Thursday accused the United States of acting in bad faith, saying Washington's push for full sanctions pressure against Pyongyang would stall progress on the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

"We expect the Russians and all countries to abide to the U.N. Security Council resolutions and enforce sanctions on North Korea", he said.

"The U.S. should, even at this belated time, respond to our honest efforts in a corresponding manner", the ministry said.

North Korea also accused unidentified high-level U.S. officials of "going against the intention of President Trump" by "making baseless allegations against us and making desperate attempts at intensifying the worldwide sanctions and pressure".

"Dealing with Americans is hard, and as our main goal is total disarmament of the whole Korean Peninsula, it is necessary that the Americans also abide by their commitments but they refuse to do so".

"The Americans utter handsome words when negotiating and promise a very bright future but they deliver on none of their commitments when it comes to action", Larijani said.

The foreign ministry said that despite their efforts to work with the US - by stopping their missile launches and nuclear tests - America continues to insist on "denuclearization first", and continues to encourage worldwide sanctions against the North.

North Korea slammed the U.S. for lacking "basic decorum" in nuke talks.

Earlier this month, August 3, the U.S. mission to the UN submitted proposals to the UN Security Council suggesting new sanctions against North Korea.

North Korean officials have toured China to discuss economic development and speculators are snapping up property along their common border.

It wasn't clear when another inter-Korean summit might happen, but if the April 27 summit agreements between Moon and Kim are followed through on, the leaders will likely meet in Pyongyang in the next couple of months. South Korea's unification minister will lead the delegation from Seoul but North Korea, which proposed the Monday meeting first, did not confirm the makeup of its delegation.

Pyongyang's state media has highlighted it has made goodwill gestures, such as a moratorium on nuclear and missile tests, the dismantling of a nuclear site, and the return of the remains of USA soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War.

In the meantime, both Koreas are seeking an end of the Korean War.

The Korean Peninsula is still technically in a state of war because the 1950-53 fighting ended with a ceasefire, not a peace treaty.

Earlier on Thursday, North Korea's Rodong Sinmun said in a commentary that ending the Korean War is "the first process for ensuring peace and security not only in the Korean peninsula but also in the region and the world".

Donald Trump has touted the summit with Kim Jong-un in Singapore as a historic breakthrough.
