The tropical-storm-force winds associated with Debby are well removed from the center as indicated by a recent ASCT pass and are occurring within a cyclonically curved band of moderate convection. Hence, the tropical storm warning mentioned earlier.

A tropical storm watch is in effect for the Big Island, where high winds and risky surf are expected as Hector churns westward.

The forecast, released last week, said the tropical Atlantic was “anomalously cool” and strong wind shear has been recorded over the Caribbean in the last month.

According to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, the center of the hurricane was located about 225 miles south-southeast of Hilo, or 400 miles southeast of Honolulu.

This subtropical system is not expected to impact land and will remain over the open waters of the Atlantic.

Maximum sustained winds are near 75 km/h with higher gusts and little change in strength is forecast today, with slow weakening expected to begin late tonight or on Thursday. It was moving west at 9 miles per hour.

Two new tropical storms were strengthening off Mexico on Monday and both were projected to reach hurricane force while marching northwestward parallel to the coast, bringing heavy surf.

On Monday, Hector's maximum sustained winds peaked at an estimated 155 miles per hour, just shy of Category 5 intensity, making it the strongest central Pacific hurricane since Ioke in 2006, according to Colorado State University tropical scientist Dr. Phil Klotzbach.

High Surf Warning up to 15 feet for east and southeast facing shores until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

John was expected to strengthen rapidly and become a major hurricane by late Tuesday.
