A Wake Forest assistant basketball coach has been charged with assault after a deadly attack on a Florida tourist in New York City, the New York Post reported Thursday.

Jones turned himself in for the assault on Thursday morning.

The two men got into a confrontation early Sunday in the borough of Queens, and Jones allegedly struck Szabo in the face, according to the New York Police Department.

He was taken to a hospital and died on Tuesday.

The driver then fled and remains at large, police said.

Wake Forest University officials tell WFMY News 2 they will release a statement later this evening. Szabo fell, hit his head on the pavement and lost consciousness. Jones was released on his own recognizance and was ordered to return to court on October 2.

In a statement, Wake Forest said the school would comment further once it gathered more information. One of its assistants has reportedly been charged in an attack on a NY tourist who later died. The investigation is ongoing.

According to Jones's bio at Wake Forest's sports website, he is a Philadelphia native who attended Arkansas Tech and began his basketball coaching career in Washington, D.C., with an AAU squad named Team Takeover.

Head coach Danny Manning said at the time that Jones was a "well-respected bright mind" in the coaching world and brought "new blood" and "new perspectives" to Wake Forest. "Sandor was super outgoing, friendly, and an incredibly smart businessman".

"He was always upbeat, positive, kind and caring", the post read. "He was a really good person". His family says he was in NY for a wedding.

"We're going to say one thing and that's all".
