Devin Nunes' office dismisses leaked comments as 'routine observations'

Howard TerryAug 11, 2018

Those comments were made by California Congressman Devin Nunes who heads the House Intelligence Committee. "Which is really the danger... we have to keep all these seats".

Later, he talks about the midterms and the honest need to keep a Republican majority in both the House and Senate, something Democrats are hoping to clinch.

The audio was recorded by a member of the progressive group "Fuse Washington", and played on MSNBC Wednesday. He served as a member of President Trump's transition team and has been a staunch defender of the president in the Russian Federation investigation.

Those priorities include pushing Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, through Senate confirmation, and potentially making another run at impeaching Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Nunes said, "It's a bit complicated" because "we only have so many months left, right?"

"Do you want them to drop everything and not confirm the Supreme Court justice, the new Supreme Court justice?"

In response to the articles of impeachment House Speaker Paul Ryan quickly stated that he does not support impeaching Rosenstein for a "number of reasons", essentially shutting down the impeachment attempt. If Rosenstein declines to do so, Trump can take the repeal-the-regulation route, but not without consequences of ensuing press and public ire. In an administration which many ethics experts agree has thrown the restrictions on conflict of interest out the window - as the Trump presidency and Trump business sometimes feel like they are merging into one - House and Senate Republicans have sat on their hands, watching their television sets and Twitter feed with a cringe, as the swamp keeps getting deeper. "It's a matter of timing".

The Committee conducted its own investigation into Russian election interference which finished this year. Heck, putting Kavanaugh on the court could very well be the thing that spares Trump in the long term since any charges against the president would seem destined to go to the Supreme Court, and Kavanaugh has stated unambiguously that a president should be immune from such investigations and prosecutions. He added, "so it's not a matter that any of us like Rosenstein".

Rep. Chris CollinsChristopher (Chris) Carl CollinsCongress should prohibit members from serving on company boards The Hill's Morning Report: Where the Mueller probe stands Bill would ban House members from serving on boards of publicly held companies MORE' (R-N.Y.) opponent for his congressional seat told CNN on Saturday that Collins' decision to suspend his reelection campaign was the right move. Reporting has regularly described Trump ruing Sessions's recusal because he believed his attorney general should be there to protect him.

"I don't think we should be cavalier with this process", said Ryan.

Nunes concludes by saying Republicans need to keep their majority in Congress to protect the president.
