As the weekend approached, D.C. officials prepared for the "Unite the Right 2" rally that's coming to Washington, D.C. on the anniversary of a violent rally in Charlottesville, Va. where one woman died and 19 others were injured. The auto plowed through the crowed following the shutdown of the Unite the Right rally by police after white nationalists, neo-Nazis and members of the "alt-right" and counter-protesters clashed near Emancipation Park, where a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee is slated to be removed.

Last year, Hundreds of counter-protesters clashed with the rally attendees.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and the city of Charlottesville, Virginia proactively declared a state of emergency ahead of this weekend's anniversary of the Unite the Right rally. By the time she arrived in Charlottesville previous year, numerous neo-Nazis who were present already knew who she was, as well as intimate details about her life.

On Thursday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced she signed an order to increase security ahead of a planned nationalist rally in front of the White House.

A 32-year-old Heather Heyer was killed in August 2017, while she was struck by a auto that had smashed into a crowd of counter protesters.

According to a release from Northam's office, the state of emergency declaration "allows state agencies to perform actions outside the scope of normal operations" to help ensure "all necessary resources and assistance are provided as quickly as possible to local governments, and Virginia's residents". There are no official far-right protests planned in town this weekend, but the city's downtown area has been closed to traffic, and the University of Virginia, where hundreds of white supremacists marched with flaming torches a year ago, is restricting access to parts of its campus.

"We're bringing people from all over Sandtown, and all over Baltimore City, to go to the Unite the Right Rally", said Reverend Rodney Hudson of Ames Memorial United Methodist Church.

Saturday marks the one-year anniversary of the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville.

"There is no city better equipped to handle large-scale events, including First Amendment events, than Washington, D.C", said Metropolitan Police Department Chief Peter Newsham. Safety and security are always a top concern as restaurants are public spaces.

Police are expecting people with the Unite the Right group to travel from the Vienna Metro Station to Foggy Bottom and then head to Lafayette Square.

The President tweeted this morning, "I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence". Numerous planned community events will promote peaceful messages, including a gathering in honor of counterprotester Heather Heyer, who was run over by a suspected neo-Nazi sympathizer. And you had a group on the other side that was also very violent.

Rally supporters and counter-protesters screamed, shouted, chanted, threw punches, hurled water bottles, and unleashed chemical sprays on each other that weekend in Charlottesville.

Kessler had applied for a permit to hold his anniversary rally in Charlottesville, and had sued the city when they denied him the permit, but he dropped his battle with the city in late July.
