Ryanair braces for biggest ever one-day strike

Eileen GuzmanAug 11, 2018

Despite the walkouts, 85pc of its scheduled flights, more than 2,000, will operate as normal, Ryanair said.

But Ryanair, in a statement said "there will be no cancellations (of flights to and from the Netherlands) as a result of the unnecessary strike action by the Dutch pilot union".

If the Dutch airport strike on Friday goes ahead, Dutch Ryanair pilots will join those in Germany, Ireland, Belgium and Sweden in striking all day.

The airline said the strikes were "regrettable and unjustified" and called for unions to come back to the negotiating table.

"They tweeted: "£ryanair cancelled my flight in the last min because of pilots strike.

Ryanair built its low-priced business model without unions but said past year it would recognize them.

But pilots counter that Ryanair has refused to engage in meaningful dialogue about collective labour agreements since it began recognising unions in December 2017. Ryanair had filed for an urgent court order to prevent industrial action by pilots in the Netherlands.

Ryanair has described the German strike as "unjustified".

The action is the largest in a series of strikes over pay and conditions.

Another key complaint of workers based in countries other than Ireland is the fact that Ryanair employs them under Irish legislation, arguing most of its employees work on board Irish planes.

"We expect the company to lower profit guidance for FY19 as it lowers capacity, on both strike disruption and crew shortages, and see weaker unit revenue trends as strike-affected traffic is redeployed on to operating flights and as passengers book away from what is now a less reliable travel option than usual", HSBC analyst Andrew Lobbenberg said.

It's perhaps one of the most disheartening feelings in the world when you've spent your hard earned cash, done your holiday shopping and told everyone and their dog that you're off to spend a holiday in the sun, to then be told that lift-off isn't quite ready to happen.

Unions representing Ryanair staff said they want work rules to be governed by the laws of countries where employees are based, not the laws in Ireland where Ryanair is headquartered.

It has already threatened to move part of its Dublin fleet to Poland, which could cost 300 jobs, including 100 pilot positions.

Unions have strongly condemned what they see as Ryanair's attempts to play countries off against each other.
