Howard TerryAug 11, 2018

A shooting in a small Canadian city Friday that left four people dead, including two police officers who were responding to call of shots fired, struck a nerve in a country that has been roiled in recent months by several instances of mass violence.

The police confirmed that one suspect has been taken in police in custody. When she was hired, police told reporters how excited they were to have her on patrol because she was from the area.

David MacCoubrey says he awoke in his apartment on Brookside Drive around 7:07 a.m.

Three RCMP officers were killed and two more were wounded in 2014 in Moncton, New Brunswick, about 195 km (121 miles) from Fredericton, in one of the worst incidents of its kind in Canada.

Police Chief Leanne Fitch says the victims include Const. Robb Costello and Const. Sara Burns, 43, and two civilians - a man and a woman - who remain unidentified. He said he dropped to the floor of his apartment and stayed there until the all-clear was given.

"I just woke up and heard gunshots and I looked outside my window".

Authorities in the provincial capital, about 75 kilometers (45 miles) from the border between Canada and the USA state of ME, had initially urged people in the neighborhood to stay indoors.

Residents said the incident began at about 7 a.m.at an apartment complex on Brookside Drive.

"That's when they (the officers) were shot", he said during a news conference.

"Please appreciate this is a hard time for their families and our colleagues", the force tweeted, adding that more information would be released when they're able.

New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant also cited the fearless work of first responders in a statement of his own.

Fredericton, a city of about 60,000, is the capital of New Brunswick, Canada.

Police in Fredericton are asking anyone with photos or video footage of the fatal shooting in Fredericton to come forward. "The police officer told me to stay away from the windows and to lock the doors".

UDPATE: At this time we can confirm that we have one suspect in custody. He has two adult daughters from a previous relationship, she said, adding that the entire family is in shock.
