Donald Trump's Upcoming Visit To Ireland Has Been Cancelled

Howard TerrySep 12, 2018

Irish protesters had vowed to turn out thousands of people for a Trump visit - including the "Trump baby" balloon that made such a splash during the president's United Kingdom trip in July.

The President's trip, planned for November 12th after Armistice Day commemorations in France, will not now happen.

The Irish Green Party, which had strongly opposed Mr Trump's visit, described the cancellation as "erratic".

Last week Ireland's deputy premier Simon Coveney said the Irish government was "a little taken by surprise" when the announcement was made.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has yet to respond to the news.

The Irish Government had been heavily criticised for the planned visit.

The President is scheduled to travel to G20 meetings later in November in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, and make a stop in Colombia. "These policies do not reflect the Irish people's values ― we need to show him and the world that this is not normal".

That summit, in Helsinki, led to widespread criticism that Trump was deferential to Putin and did not challenge him about Russian interference in the 2016 USA presidential election.

And he pointed to the lack of a United States ambassador to Ireland for two years when he said: "I think it's time to try and get this relationship sorted".

"It was a bolt out of the blue".

Mr Martin said it showed the need for some indication of when a U.S. ambassador would be appointed as in the past they had been a "key conduit" with American Presidents.

He added: "I've never seen anything like this, genuinely".

Mr Varadkar has previously said that there is a standing invitation for any USA president to come to Ireland as many have in the past.

He also said it could be symptomatic of how Mr Trump operates, making decisions and undoing them quickly.
