South Africa 'close to war zone' with 57 murders a day: minister

Howard TerrySep 12, 2018

"It can not be that South Africans are placed under such fear and stress", he said.

The South African Police Service has released the latest crime stats for 2017/18, revealing an unsettling increase in the number of murders taking place in South Africa over the a year ago.

Cape Town (AFP) - South Africa's murder rate rose again a year ago, official statistics showed Tuesday, with over 20,000 killed across the country - about 57 a day - as police admitted they were struggling to keep control. There were 4 099 Attempted Murder cases opened.

"Sixty-two individuals were murdered during 58 attacks on farms and small holdings".

Many murders were linked to gang violence in Western Cape province, whose capital is Cape Town. Nyangna in Western Cape took the top spot.

Cele also said rape was up 0.5 per cent, with 40,035 recorded instances compared to 39,828 in 2017.

Sexual assault also increased by a significant amount, up by 8.8%, from 6271 in 2016-2017 to 6786 in 2017-2018. 3,915 women and children were murdered, in total.

"While this is good‚ one needs to look at [the figures] in conjunction with the decrease in the public reporting crimes to police".

Zinn said there is also something peculiar about the murder and attempted murder increases‚ "which we usually see a close correlation between".

South Africa is known internationally for its violent crime, but annual statistics are often disputed, especially rape figures.

In June, Cele announced a specialised task force to prioritise cash-in-transit heists.

The question is, he said: "How do we collectively pick up the ball, change the game plan and re-position the police?"
