Susan Collins Crowdpac campaign for Brett Kavanaugh 'no' vote tops $800,000

Ismael LynchSep 12, 2018

"I consider this quid pro quo fundraising to be the equivalent of an attempt to bribe me to vote against Judge Kavanaugh", Collins said.

Collins told the AP that she hasn't made up her mind yet.

For liberals concerned about what a seat for Kavanaugh would do to the court, Collins has been both a source of limited hope and frustration, expressing concerns about threats to Roe vs. Wade, while consulting with the Trump administration through the selection process. Susan Collins' opponents if she votes for him-but the plan could backfire.

In order to influence Collins' vote, political action committees Maine People's Alliance and Mainers for Accountable Leadership have joined forces with Ady Barkan, a dying father who has advocated tirelessly for health care reform, in order to crowdfund a campaign to influence her.

Two groups of ME progressives have pledged to donate up to $1.3 million to Collins's next opponent if the ME senator votes to confirm Kavanaugh, Newsmax reported. "Annie Clark, a spokeswoman for Ms. Collins, provided The New York Times with copies of a letter and multiple voice mail messages addressed to the senator using vulgar language and outright threats". Murkowski has not said whether she will vote for or against Trump's nominee, but if her vote for Gorsuch is any indication, pressure from the GOP will outweigh pressure from pro-choice groups. Ethics expert Adav Noti at the Campaign Legal Center, however, tells the Washington Post that the campaign appears to be an attempt to do an end-run around federal bribery laws.

Other organizations that work at the intersection of money politics disagreed.

"The people of ME are asking you to be a hero, Senator Collins", reads the campaign's description. "Those are the people we're here to represent and those people get the bulk of our attention".

The campaign is just one of many created to influence Collins' vote on Kavanaugh, who opponents say could be the fifth vote in a majority Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Collins has been considered a potential vote against Kavanaugh on the abortion issue since she supports abortion rights and hinted last week to a Maine newspaper that if Kavanaugh "was not truthful [during his confirmation hearing], then obviously that would be a major problem for me". With him there would be a five-judge majority to overturn Roe v. Wade, either directly or by gutting the historic ruling.
