Donald Trump Attacks Nike As New Controversial Ad Is Revealed

Grant SmithSep 13, 2018

Kaepernick, formerly the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, was a controversial choice due to his notoriety for kneeling during the national anthem at NFL games. It can also be seen online.

Nike's online sales have increased 31 per cent in the wake of its controversial "Just Do It" advertising campaign featuring National Football League star Colin Kaepernick.

The two minute-plus spot features dozens of athletes, including tennis champion Serena Williams, basketball's LeBron James and Kenya's Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge.

"They did not tell me it was coming", Woods told reporters at the BMW Championship outside Philadelphia on Friday. "When corporate does things that are outside of golf and outside of my realm, that's what they do".

Woods, the second most successful golfer ever with 14 major titles, has been careful throughout his career to avoid saying or doing anything that could be construed as political.

On Monday, Nike released a promotional image for their new Kaepernick-inspired campaign which featured a black and white portrait of the player superimposed with the slogan "Believe in something".

In an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Trump said "I don't like what Nike did".

"I love that they took these big powerful influential people and they also took small town people like me, just like real live people, who got to live out their dreams and put them altogether because it is real life", Woollcott told WXYZ. It's a lovely spot. "It's a lovely spot and pretty powerful people (are) in the spot".

Nine Line Apparel introduced the new line in direct response to sports clothing brand Nike's decision to use Kaepernick, who sparked a wave of hugely divisive NFL national anthem protests in 2016, as the new face of its iconic "Just Do It" campaign.

"What was Nike thinking?". Trump tweeted on Wednesday.

He posted a revised version of a widely circulated campaign photo, which features a close-up, black-and-white shot of the former San Francisco 49er with text reading, "Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything".
