Sen. Mark Warner to vote against Brett Kavanaugh confirmation

Howard TerrySep 13, 2018

Democrats are strongly against Kavanaugh's nomination, with 63% who say the senate shouldn't vote in favor, slightly down from 67%.

Vice-President Mike Pence acknowledged on Sunday that he may be required to cast a tie-breaking vote to secure the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh as a supreme court justice, in what would be a first in United States history.

The bedlam is unlikely to change any votes in the Senate.

If the Senate confirms Kavanaugh, which still appears likely despite sharpening Democratic questions about his honesty, he will cement a five-member majority of Republican-appointed justices. "And ultimately that serves to hurt our democracy and the rule of law because people will have much less confidence that that institution is fair".

"When he (Nicholas) fell over, I fell over with him", she said.

Progressives demanded a fight against Kavanaugh, and Booker arrived Thursday morning ready to deliver.

Fallon compared the decision on the court nominee to big votes of the past such as the Iraq War authorization that end up defining lawmakers' careers.

But Kavanaugh tampered the email during an exchange with Democratic Sen.

Yet Schumer managed to go on the Senate floor and claim with a straight face that "there is a lot we don't know about Judge Kavanaugh". Committee members Cory Booker of New Jersey and Kamala Harris of California are among the Democrats considered possible candidates in the next presidential campaign.

In a summary of the argument presented by the pro-life Catholic group Priests for Life in the case Priests for Life v. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services which was brought over the HHS contraception mandate, Kavanaugh stated that the priests "said filling out the form would make them complicit in the provision of the abortion-inducing drugs that they were, as a religious matter, objecting to". The second-ranking Republican, Sen.

She was the last to join colleagues' calls to suspend the hearing.

Trump took on his potential 2020 rivals directly. When Kavanaugh said he couldn't remember, Harris said, "I think you're thinking of someone, and you don't want to tell us", a remark that led to an interruption from Sen. Heidi Heitkamp. "I'll be running against them and I look so forward to it".

This was despite screaming protesters who jeered him and Democratic senators who gave the judge a thumbs-down before the confirmation battle even began and attacked him with everything they had. They pointed to emails each sent to supporters this week asking for signatures opposing Kavanaugh - a common tactic to build email lists that can later be used for fundraising and organizing.

Sens. Joe Donnelly in IN or Claire McCaskill in Missouri may benefit from a court battle that energizes the Democratic base.

During a Fox News Sunday interview, Coons refused to say whether Booker would be required to meet with the Senate Ethics Committee, suggesting the document dump might have come at a price. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.

At least some Democrats expressed frustration with the outbursts in this week's hearings. They debated options, Schumer said, but decided on a strategy of staying in the room for questions, protest and disruption. The ABA's rating of judicial nominees have generated great controversy in recent years over charges that it has been politically biased at times.

Gone are the niceties and overtures of an earlier era, when senators deferred to a president's prerogative to put in place a qualified nominee of the commander in chief's choosing. Between 2001 and 2003, he stole confidential letters, notes and talking points written by Democrats about Bush's prospective judicial nominees, giving them to Republicans so those nominees could prepare for questions raised during their confirmation hearings.

Schumer, on Friday, seemed pleased with the result of the hard-edged approach.

An aide to Harris said the question - and queries on race-based admissions, gay rights and abortion access - was part of an effort to show the real-world implications of approving Trump's appointee to the Supreme Court in a hearing that often devolved into legal jargon.

"This was a good week".
