Americans invited to 'shoot guns at Hurricane Florence'

Ismael LynchSep 14, 2018

A Category 4 on the five-level Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale, Florence was 525 miles south-southeast of Bermuda and the centre of the hurricane was forecast to pass between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in its 5:00 pm (2100 GMT) advisory.

Crystal Kirwan didn't see she had much choice as she got her family ready to leave their home Monday on the coast of North Carolina, with Category 4 Hurricane Florence threatening the state.

North Carolina's governor declared a state of emergency on Sunday, one day after SC.

The storm's first effects were already apparent on barrier islands as risky rip currents hit beaches and seawater flowed over a state highway.

Gov. Henry McMaster has issued an evacuation order for SC as the area prepares for Hurricane Florence's possible landfall.

Empty shelves are seen at a supermarket as residents prepare for Storm Florence's descent in Columbia, South Carolina, U.S., September 10, 2018, in this still image taken from a video obtained from social media. Freshwater flooding is extremely likely once the storm makes landfall, possibly as far inland as West Virginia.

Describing Hurricane Florence as "a no-kidding nightmare" is certainly appropriate, with Gerst warning Americans on the East Coast to prepare for the storm's arrival.

Americans have been invited to shoot "guns at Hurricane Florence" in a freaky event created to scare the storm away. Forecast models suggest that more than 2 feet of rain could fall over the higher elevations of the Carolinas and Virginia, which would generate risky flooding downstream.

More than a million people in the southeast United States faced mandatory evacuation orders.

The move also closed state offices and schools in the eastern half of the state, including Lexington and Richland counties, where tropical storm-strength winds are expected as early as late Thursday.

Hurricane Helene is a category 2 storm but is expected to go out to sea with no threat to land.

Liz Browning Fox was planning to ignore these orders and ride out the storm in the village of Buxton on the North Carolina Outer Banks.

South Carolina's governor Henry McMaster too.

Evacuation shelter locations for those evacuating from the state's northern and central coastal counties will be available on, McMaster said. Damaging winds, floods, high surf and storm surge are still possible. Hurricane-to-tropical-storm-force winds could extend inland, depending on the storm's track.

We will continue to update this story as more news comes in and as the storm approaches.

Hundreds of thousands of people are under evacuation orders in Virginia and the Carolinas as Hurricane Florence gets closer to its anticipated landfall later this week.

McMaster said on CNN Tuesday that officials are "taking nothing for granted" with Florence predicted to make landfall Thursday. "Wind could move water into the tidal Potomac and the Chesapeake Bay", Pallozzi says, emphasizing that those flooding concerns will mainly be along the coastline of the rivers.

Currently, 1,600 National Guard members are on duty and ready to deploy - a number Livingston said likely will grow to more than 3,000.
