On cusp of 3rd WNBA title, Seattle Storm not about to relax

Grant SmithSep 14, 2018

The Storm closed on a 26-15 run to seal the game, the series, Seattle's third WNBA championship.

In Game 1, Washington had no shot as Seattle asserted their dominance.

The 2016 UConn graduate put her name on another Wednesday night when she and the Seattle Storm finished off a three-game sweep of the Washington Mystics in the WNBA Finals with a 98-82 road victory.

Still, Mystics guard Natasha Cloud described her team's situation as "David and Goliath", as no team in WNBA history has come back to win the championship after trailing 2-0 in the Finals. "We're one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the league". It was a rare show of emotion from a normally reserved Bird, and the 14 points she dropped in the fourth, including four threes, to send the Storm to the Finals set social media ablaze. "And I think it's just because of my age and because the older you get, the more you know, and the more you know can go wrong". From there, it was smooth sailing to the 16-point win. That's what you're supposed to do when your basketball team falls short of winning a title - try to create a more super super-team.

"I'm still trying to find the right words, and I'm a guy that can usually find the right words", Hughes said after the game. "I was fine where I was, but boy I would have missed a lot of joy that being part of watching this group grow. But we had a goal coming into this year, we knew what to do and how to get better and we just continue to push one another".

It was Stewart and Howard who went off tonight.

Series MVP Breanna Stewart led with 30 points and eight rebounds. Their combined 59 points alone accounted for more than 61 percent of the Storms' points. "She's kind of helped me get to this point, and like you said, if there was one person on this team that I wanted to win it with it was her".

"We're here in front of our home crowd and we're fighting", Mystics guard Kristi Toliver said. Even though it hadn't been in the WNBA yet, she clearly knows what it takes, and sometimes it just takes a couple of years to really figure out yourself in this league because it's a very tough league to play in, and now here she is.

But the Mystics couldn't get any closer, as Finals MVP Breanna Stewart's three-point play on the ensuing possession ignited an 8-0 Seattle run that pushed the deficit back to double digits.

Stewart was a unanimous choice to the all-WNBA first team, the league announced Wednesday, while fellow UConn graduate Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury extended her own record with a 10th first-team selection.

Stewart upped her points per game once the playoffs rolled around, and Bird and Loyd each had signature scoring performances en route to the trophy. Already playing with superstar Elena Delle Donne nursing a knee injury suffered earlier in the playoffs, the team fell in an early hole and trailed by 16 at halftime.
