Russia All Set to Launch Biggest Military Drills in Its History

In this photo provided by Russian Defense Ministry Press Service on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, right, his Chinese counterpart, Gen. Wei Fenghe, left, and Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov, center, visit the Tsugol firing range in eastern Siberia where almost 300,000 Russian troops and about 3,200 Chinese troops are participating in joint exercises.

President Vladimir Putin planned to attend the exercises, featuring about 300,000 Russian troops, after hosting Chinese leader Xi Jinping at an economic forum in Russia's far eastern city Vladivostok.

"In the far East of Russian Federation started the exercises "Vostok-2018", - stated in the message of the Ministry of defense". He said Moscow is interested in seeing how Beijing military has evolved through modern times given that the country has not fought since 1979.

The Vostok-2018 drills involve around 300,000 troops, more than 1,000 aircraft, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles, up to 80 vessels, up to 36,000 tanks, armored personnel carriers, and other vehicles.

This activity was part of the first stage of the exercise, which runs until September 17, the ministry said in a statement.

- More than 1,000 aircraft and drones will also participate in the military exercise.

More than 25 warships and around 30 planes took part in the drills, as Russian Federation increased its military presence in Syria where it intervened to help the Bashar al-Assad regime in 2015.

They'll be joined by thousands of troops from China and Mongolia, which the Chinese Defense Ministry insisted wasn't "directed against any third party" and would focus purely on "defenses, firepower strikes and counterattack".

The September 11-17 exercises, called Vostok-2018 (East-2018) and billed by Moscow as its biggest in decades - or in history - come amid persistently high tension between Moscow and the West and are being closely watched by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

"I have long wanted to give American colleagues a globe so they can look at it and explain why the declared 'enemies of America, ' are located in the Middle East and the Far East and all their military bases and forces are snuggled up to Russian borders", Shoigu was quoted in the interview with Italian newspaper Il Giornale, according to a Reuters report.

The Vostok 2018 exercise by the Russian military is witnessing its biggest military drill by the country in 37 years.

"We're aware of Russia's right to sovereignty and to exercise in order to ensure their readiness", he said.

Pentagon spokesman Col. Rob Manning said Monday that the USA respects Russian Federation and China's decision to hold military exercises, something the U.S. also does with its allies and global partners.

Analysts say Moscow had to invite the Chinese and Mongolian militaries given the proximity of the war games to their borders and because the scale meant the neighbouring countries would probably have seen them as a threat had they been excluded.

Relations between Russian Federation and the West have been severely strained by Moscow's actions in Ukraine and Syria and its alleged interference in elections in the United States and European countries.
