UK motorists need to take EU test in no-deal Brexit

Howard TerrySep 15, 2018

Among the topics covered are the validity of British driving licences on the continent, roaming charges for mobile phones and the future of the European space and satellites programmes.

There are also concerns about delays at the United Kingdom border.

The government said British firms won't be able to bid for work on the EU's Galileo satellite navigation program if there is no deal, and "may face difficulty carrying out and completing existing contracts". Without an adequacy decision from the European Commission allowing data transfer between the EU and United Kingdom, companies should "consider assisting your EU partners in identifying a legal basis for those transfers".

"And even in the event of a no-deal Brexit, it's not to say there will be nothing done".

"This looks unsafe. The government hasn't figured out how to sort out the Irish border, but now we're being told that we'll no longer be able to keep tabs on which European Union citizens with guns", Liberal Democrat MP and Best for Britain campaigner Layla Moran said in a statement.

The DUP's Brexit spokesperson has accused Sinn Fein MEP Martina Anderson of "whinging" about government warnings over the possible need for worldwide driving permits in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

In the scenario of a no-deal Brexit, it is widely believed that there would be risks and some short-term disruption. Critics suggest this means there would need to be extra physical checks at the Irish border.

The government says the current process for getting one type of permit over the counter at the 90 post offices it is available at "takes around five minutes on a turn-up-and-go basis".

The UK government was planning contra-flow systems on the M20 and was talking to European Union member states about "mitigating" potential disruption. "It is a precautionary measure and I think the government should be commended".

"The UK does not require visiting motorists ... to hold a separate IDP to guarantee the recognition of their driving licence", the government document states.

More no-deal publications are expected in the coming weeks.

"The government has no mandate for any of this and it's too big an issue to be left to a Brexit elite in Westminster".
