Fiction or reality? Thousands of spider webs cover this Greek town

Giannis Giannakopoulos posted this video of the spider web to YouTube.

It's not quite the World Wide Web - but the spiders of Aitoliko in Greece have made a good start.

A soft, white blanket of webbing formed near a lagoon in western Greece, reportedly allowing a massive mating "party" to ensue between spiders in the town of Aitoliko. They commonly build their webs near watery habitats and some species can even walk on water, as reported by Science Alert. "This phenomenon has arisen from a population explosion of this spider".

"The spiders will have their party and will soon die", she said, per the BBC.

As the giant web started scaring local residents, Maria Chatzaki, professor of molecular biology and genetics at the Democritus University of Thrace revealed that these spiders are not unsafe for humans, and it will not cause any damage to the flora in the area.

According to arachnologist Maria Chatzaki, they're always from the same type of spider: the Tetragnatha genus, a tiny critter no longer than 2 centimeters, or 0.7 inches. "It's the ecosystem's natural reactions and once the temperatures begin to drop and the gnat populations die out, the spider populations will decrease as well".

This phenomenon is actually a seasonal occurrence brought about by an influx in the number of mosquitoes in the area.

Molecular biologist Maria Chatzaki from the Democritus University of Thrace in Greece explained, "These spiders are not unsafe for humans and will not cause any damage to the area's flora".

"There are huge numbers of male and female spiders mating [underneath the webs]", Chatzaki said.
