Goodbye Kirk! - tropics settle down for the moment

Ismael LynchSep 27, 2018

Proving that conditions in the tropics can change literally overnight, Tropical Storm Kirk, once a promising storm racing across the Atlantic, has dissipated as of Monday morning. In comparison to tropical cyclones, these systems generally have a radius of maximum winds occurring relatively far from the center (usually greater than 60 nautical miles), and generally have a less symmetric wind field and distribution of convection.

A look at the Tropics on this September 24th has quite a bit of potential activity brewing in both the Atlantic and Pacific.

Leslie does not pose a threat to Florida or the U.S. Coastline.

If the storm does form into a tropical storm, it would get a different name. As of the 11 AM advisory from the NHC, Leslie has maximum winds of 40 miles per hour.

Leslie, which became the 12th named storm was expected to move slowly Sunday and Monday, the NHC said. However, Leslie may be short-lived as well.

An approaching cold front from the northwest has stalled along the Arkansas-Louisiana border, with low pressures developing to our west in East Texas. The system became what the weather folks call a "remnant low" and was written off by the Hurricane Center as of its 11 a.m. advisory. That transition should happen within the next 48 hours.

Another area to watch continues to be an area of low pressure that will curve northeast near the Outer Banks of North Carolina this week. Satellite imagery showed dry air in the mid to upper levels of the atmosphere, limiting development.

After two days, the shear will increase.

More rain is in the forecast for far eastern North Carolina as some of the remnant moisture from Hurricane Florence whips back around for a second pass at the already beleaguered region. The winds in the Caribbean are extremely unfavorable for development right now.
