Trump Reaffirms Support For Top Court Pick, Says Testimony Was "Honest"

Lynette PayneSep 29, 2018

Flake, a 55-year-old senator from Arizona who is not running for re-election this year, sat through Thursday's nine-hour Senate Judiciary Committee hearing and testimony by Kavanaugh and the woman accusing him of assault, Christine Blasey Ford. "I also look forward to what Judge Kavanaugh has to say. As the Senate has requested, this update must be limited in scope and completed in less than one week", the White House said in a statement citing the president.

"I want to watch", Trump said ahead of the hearing featuring Christine Blasey Ford, a university professor who has accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were teenagers.

He said he would stick to his promise to support Kavanaugh's nomination in the committee vote, but under one condition: That there be an FBI investigation of Ford's allegations.

Senator Flake had earlier said he would vote for Mr Kavanaugh's confirmation but was caught by two women on his way to the vote who told them their own personal stories of being sexually abused. "She was very good in many respects". Flake then said that he would only vote to confirm Kavanaugh in the full Senate if the FBI conducted a week-long investigation into the accuser's claim.

Connecticut Democrat Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat on the Judiciary panel, said an FBI investigation "has to be more than a sham, and a charade".

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh offered emotional testimony Thursday about what a "circus" his confirmation process has become and denounced the sexual assault allegations that have "destroyed" his name.

The final vote was 11-10 in favour.

Ford recounted Kavanaugh's alleged attack on her at a house party when they were in high school.

Dozens of "rapid-response" protests are planned outside of US senators' offices in support of Ford and other survivors of sexual assault who have come forward with their stories. He has repeatedly called for Ford to testify to the Senate and indicated that he would wait to hear her speak to make up his mind on the confirmation.

"I want to watch, I want to see, "Mr Trump said at a news conference in NY on Wednesday, adding that he was "open to changing my mind".

In their new editorial, America's editors said they were still committed to finding a justice with Kavanaugh's textualist approach to jurisprudence that is suspicious of the kind of judicial innovation that led to the Roe decision.

"Jeff's trying his best to bring the country together and vote the best way he knows how", said Graham, who was on his way to meet with Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell to discuss the arrangement. Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska would do the same.

Democrats pointed to the lack of an impartial investigation and the committee's refusal to call witnesses who might be able to back up her claim, or to seek testimony from the two other women who accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct.

"I observed Brett Kavanaugh drink excessively at many of these parties and engage in abusive and physically aggressive behavior towards girls, including pressing girls against him without their consent, "grinding" against girls, and attempting to remove or shift girls' clothing to expose private body parts", Swetnick said.
