Typhoon Trami packing 202km/h winds in Japan

Howard TerrySep 30, 2018

Japan issued evacuation orders and warnings to about 700,000 households in southern and western Japan.

More than 1,000 flights have been cancelled, affecting over 100,000 passengers.

Outlying islands in the Okinawan chain, some 1,000 km southwest of Tokyo, were being pounded by heavy rain and high tides a day before an Okinawan gubernatorial election on Sunday.

Trami will also likely bring strong winds of up to 40 m/s (144 kph) to the Tokai region in central Japan, and 35 m/s (126 kph) to northern Kyushu in southern Japan and the Kanto-Koshin region in eastern Japan, including Tokyo.

Bullet trains and other train lines were shutting down while the storm passed.

The busy airport was closed for several days after flooding by Typhoon Jebi and a freighter hit the bridge connecting it to the mainland earlier in the month.

At mid-morning Sunday, Trami was accelerating northeast, skimming the south coasts of Kyushu and Shikoku Islands.

The storm's huge eye was forecast to move near the city of Osaka before churning across the Japanese archipelago, likely hitting areas still recovering from extreme weather that has battered Japan in recent months.

Television footage showed cars in Okinawa island flipped over by the strength of the wind.

At least 84 people suffered minor injuries.

Authorities issued evacuation advisories to some 349,000 residents, while electricity was cut to more than 300,000 houses, according to public broadcaster NHK.

Trami is now heading towards Japan's northeast.

Strong winds knocked down trees, blew off an outer wall from a building and left nine people injured in Okinawa.

"People in Okinawa are used to typhoons but we are strongly urging them to stay vigilant", he told AFP.

The Japanese meteorological agency warned the typhoon would bring strong winds and downpours, which could trigger landslides and floods as well as lightning strikes and tornados across the nation.

Violent gusts swept away roof tiles on some houses in Kochi city in western Japan.

West Japan Railway said it would suspend all service in the Osaka region and shut down service on the Tokaido and Sanyo branches of the high-speed Shinkansen at noon Sunday. Nearly all of services on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line are also being suspended throughout September 30, according to Central Japan Railway Co.

Kansai International Airport, which serves the greater Osaka area in western Japan, closed two runways from 11 a.m. on Sunday through 6 a.m. on Monday to prepare for the possible impact of Trami, according to a statement on its website.
