F-35 military plane crash reported in Beaufort County, South Carolina

An F-35B fighter jet crashed near Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in SC late Friday morning, military officials said, just days after the cutting-edge aircraft flew its first combat mission in Afghanistan.

Capt. Bob Bromidge, with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, told ABC News that the U.S. Marine Corps confirmed the plane was an F-35. There were no other injuries reported.

On the same day, the USA military said it carried out its first operation with the plane in Afghanistan. It marks the first crash and ejection by an F-35, Harrison said.

MCAS Beaufort is home to Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501 (VMFAT-501), the "Warlords".

No-one on the ground was hurt either in the crash.

Yesterday two F-35s made the first vertical landings on board the navy's newest aircraft carrier, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, off the east coast of America.

Last November, for example, the president told an audience of coast guard officers the United States was "ordering hundreds of millions of dollars of new airplanes for the air force, especially the F-35". The programme has been criticised for testing problems, delays and cost overruns. He or she was evaluated at the scene and then taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital before being released, according to an email from II Marine Expeditionary Force spokesman Maj.

The F-35B joint strike fighter conducted its first-ever airstrike on Thursday.

"At approximately 11:45, a 2D Marine Aircraft Wing F-35B impacted near the Broad River in Beaufort County".
