Flood Warnings in Effect as Kirk Passes South of the USVI

Howard TerryOct 01, 2018

At 8 a.m. EDT Friday, the center of Kirk was about 140 miles (225 kilometers) southwest of Lt. Lucia with maximum winds of 50 mph (80 kph). The storm is moving west-northwest at about 14 miles per hour and packs with it maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour.

Reports from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 45 miles per hour (75 km/h) with higher gusts. The remnants will move across the eastern and central Caribbean through the weekend.

Velda Joseph, in a statement, said that the organisation had been in contact with the St Lucia Meteorological Services and other relevant parties and that the tropical storm warning for the island had been lifted.

There are no storm watches or warnings issued for the territory as Tropical Storm Kirk is expected to remain south of the Virgin Islands Friday, but the storm is expected to bring two to four inches of rain to St. Croix and eastern Puerto Rico through Saturday.

Tropical Storm warnings have been discontinued for Martinique and Guadeloupe, as well as Barbados and Dominica as Tropical Storm Kirk threatens to wreak havoc with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

"This motion is expected to continue through Sunday".

The NHC expects Kirk to weaken to a tropical depression early Saturday and slow to a trough of low pressure later in the day.

Winds are expected to begin affecting the island by Thursday afternoon.

As Leslie meanders over the moderately warm water of the North Atlantic, it might eventually become more purely tropical. Forecasters warned of strong winds and said mudslides and flash flooding are possible.
