Ryanair strikes disrupt 40,000 passengers across Europe

Europe's largest low-priced carrier, which closed its last hub in France in 2011, has faced several months of strikes as a result of its decision in December to recognise unions.

A German pilots union said its members would strike on Friday, joining action by crews in Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal.

RYANAIR is operating flights to Spain today (Friday) that customers were told on Tuesday were cancelled by strikes according to incredible claims made by angry passengers who changed their travel plans.

Ryanair took the decision to cancel almost 100 further flights today after German pilots announced strike action at the last minute.

The Irish airline on Friday said that more than 2,150 of its 2,400 scheduled flights would operate as normal.

Joining in the industrial action, the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) called on Ryanair pilots in Germany to strike from 3.01am (German time) on Friday to 2.59am on Saturday.

Around 35,000 passengers are thought to be affected, with Unions claiming this is the biggest day of action yet.

Ryanair's chief operations officer Peter Bellew said the action was "deeply regrettable".

Ryanair has traditionally employed a large proportion of its staff under Irish law, which unions say inconveniences staff and impedes them from accessing local social security benefits. "O'Leary today", Thyssen said in a statement after a meeting between Ryanair's combative chief executive Michael O'Leary and European Union officials.

The German pilots' union said it could not rule out further strikes.

"Bryan Carter for Euronews says, "Here at Brussels airport, about twenty flights have been canceled and some employees of Ryanair wear tee-shirts on which are written" Ryan Air must change ", Ryan Air must change ".

The roots of today's row stretch back to autumn previous year when Ryanair 400,000 Ryanair passengers had their flights cancelled.

The Dutch union VNV said it was seeking to take legal action to prevent Ryanair from bringing pilots in from overseas to replace striking Dutch crews.

Another indication of the company's rethink on contracts came on Thursday when it announced two new bases in France.

The EU executive backed Ryanair workers on Wednesday by saying they should work under contracts in the countries where they live rather than in Ireland where the airline's planes are registered.

Two aircraft will be based at both Marseille and Bordeaux and will offer a total of 64 routes and handle 3.5 million passengers a year.
