Southerly Ocean Swell From Hurricane Rosa Expected to Produce Dangerous Surf

Ismael LynchOct 01, 2018

Hurricane Rosa is forecasted to turn sharply north and gradually weaken as it heads toward northern Baja California.

Swells generated by Rosa are forecast to affect parts of the coastlines of southwestern Mexico, the southern Baja California Peninsula, and southern California late this week and over the weekend.

In Los Angeles and Orange counties, surf could build up to 8 feet high by late Saturday, and up to 10 feet on Sunday and Monday on beaches facing the south. Sneaker waves could inundate beaches, and during high tide, some coastal areas may suffer minor flooding.

That kind of rain would be significant for Yuma, which gets only 3½ inches of rain a year on average, Deemer said.

Hurricane Rosa is expected to bring us rain as well as some potential flash flooding.

It's then expected to move quickly northwest as it weakens.

Meteorologists said that up to 10 inches of rain fell in some parts of Martinique, Dominica and Barbados as they warned of flash floods and mudslides.

Firefighters in the Phoenix area are reminding residents they can fill up sandbags for free at some area fire stations, CNN affiliate KPHO/KTVK reports. "It won't keep all of the water out". It will be from what's left of Hurricane Rosa with the most rain falling between Monday night into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The region bracing for Rosa's rain was already soaked by remnants of Hurricane Bud in June.
