Kavanaugh hearing: Sex-assault hotline gets 147% more calls on same day

Christine Blasey Ford's accusation that she was sexually assaulted by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh decades ago has prompted other women to reach out for help.

Numerous calls to the National Sexual Assault Hotline were from people looking for help.

During breaks between Thursday's rounds of questioning, C-SPAN received several powerful calls from viewers recounting past incidents of sexual abuse, some of whom said that they had rarely spoken about it before.

Kavanaugh, nominated by Republican President Donald Trump to fill a pivotal vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court, has said he has never assaulted anyone and that Ford may have mistaken him for someone else.

During the rally, the crowd chanted "We hear you, we believe you", as Wyckoff called out the names of Kavanaugh's accusers: Blasey Ford, Deborah Ramirez and Julie Swetnick.

At Safe Horizon in NY, call volume to its rape and sexual assault hotline was up 150 percent Thursday over the same day a year ago.

Sharon Daugherty, the sexual assault outreach coordinator at Palm Beach County Victim Services in Florida, said 17 women had come in to undergo examinations for attacks in the past 10 days, far more than usual. So they want people to know that the center is there for them 24 hours a day.

James Moran is the education coordinator at the Kansas City Anti-Violence Project, a nonprofit dedicated to providing advocacy and education on domestic violence, sexual assault and hate crimes to members of the LGBTQ community.

"Hearing about sexual violence in the media and online can be very hard for survivors and their loved ones", RAINN said in a Twitter statement.

"Our victim service programs went from helping about 15,000 victims per month to helping about 22,000 per month", she said.

Callers are "routed to a local RAINN affiliate organization based on the first six digits of your phone number".

In reaching out to people to encourage them to call if they need help, RAINN says, "While nearly all callers are connected directly to a staff member or volunteer at a local sexual assault service provider, a handful of providers use an answering service after daytime business hours".

"I think it's important that we remember that when we're having conversations in a general term, ... those who've been directly impacted by sexual violence in the past are listening to those conversations", Pickering said.

An American is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds, according to RAINN statistics, but only 6 of every 1,000 people who commits a sexual assault serves prison time for it.
