Trump Says Lying To Congress Not Acceptable Amid Brett Kavanaugh Investigation

A news conference Monday afternoon to announce a revamped trade agreement between the United States, Canada and Mexico quickly veered off course, after reporters began asking President Donald Trump about the FBI investigation into sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

The probe came after Kavanaugh faced a heavily-scrutinized set of hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee ahead of a possible confirmation in the Senate.

Meanwhile, the Federal Bureau of Investigation aims to complete its supplemental background check into the allegations of sexual misconduct made against Kavanaugh by the end of this week, and as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell plans to hold a vote on the nominee in the coming days. I can honestly say I never had a beer in my life, OK? "I've seen that person in very bad situations", Trump said.

"How did you get home?" he said, taking on the role of prosecutor. 'I don't remember.' How did you get there? I don't remember. How many years ago?

"She's shocked that I picked her", Trump said when he called on Vega.

US President Donald Trump has told reporters on the White House lawn that it is "a scary time for young men" who could become the subject of false accusations.

Asked if he had a message for young women, he said, "Women are doing great". "But in this realm, you are truly guilty until proven innocent".

Steve King, a Republican member of the US House of Representatives from Iowa, said: "If Kavanaugh is not confirmed, every man is subject to seeing their life's work and their reputation destroyed by an unsubstantiated allegation". "'I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know'". I don't know! But I had one beer. Flake has said Kavanaugh's nomination would end if the FBI investigation found he had lied in his Senate testimony. Trump continued in this vein, mocking the gaps in Ford's memory regarding specific details of the assault that allegedly took place some 36 years ago.

Earlier Tuesday, the president's advisers were privately marveling at how measured - for him - he had been throughout the controversy around Kavanaugh's confirmation process.

Judge's interview started but "has not been completed", his attorney said in a statement quoted by Fox News.

Chuck Grassley, the Republican chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, separately demanded in a letter to Ford's lawyers that they provide a range of materials to determine whether her allegations are credible.

The agency has also spoken to the judge's Yale classmate Deborah Ramirez, who alleges that he exposed his genitals in her face during a college drinking game.

The FBI has so far interviewed at least four people, three of whom were allegedly at the party where Blasey said she was assaulted.
