Donna Strickland named first female Nobel laureate in physics in 55 years

She is only the third woman to win the physics prize.

It is noteworthy that Dono Strickland is also the 3rd female scientist to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics after a long time. Strickland is only the third woman in history to win the physics prize.

Two of Tuesday's Nobel Prize winners enabled new studies of matter by allowing scientists to produce more powerful bursts of laser light, an official of the American Institute of Physics says.

Later, Maria Goeppert-Mayer became the second woman to win the prize in 1936 for proposing the nuclear shell model of the atomic nucleus. "But certainly it isn't that women weren't able to do it".

That work resulted in Strickland's first published scientific paper in 1985, and she went on to base her doctoral dissertation on it.

Ashkin's prize marked the ninth Nobel for work at New Jersey's Bell Labs, when it was home to research and development that supported AT&T during its monopoly. How ridiculous is that? "I'm honored to be one of those women". "She is the first woman to receive this award in 55 years", the university said on Twitter. Statistics show that women earn an even smaller percentage of bachelor's degrees in physics (20%) than they do bachelor's degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields more broadly (35%).

Jessica Wade, a physicist at Imperial College London who was at the CERN event and unhappy about Strumia's comments, said having a female Nobel victor was also important given the current fight over US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who is facing sexual misconduct allegations. "Men have to get on board, and the majority of men are absolutely on board, so sometimes it's just inertia".

According to the official Twitter handle of the Nobel Prize, Dr. Ashkin has been awarded the Prize "for the optical tweezers and their application to biological systems", while Dr. Mourou and Dr. Strickland have been awarded "for their method of generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses".

"The court's conclusion is that the evidence is enough to find the defendant guilty of one of the events", she said, adding the evidence "has mainly consisted of statements made during the trial by the injured party and several witnesses". "I think... it's somewhat thinking outside the box to stretch first, and then amplify". "There were all these geniuses getting Nobel Prizes".

The prize was also awarded to Prof Arthur Ashkin, for his invention of "optical tweezers" that grab particles, atoms, viruses and other living cells with their laser-beam fingers.

The news was announced this morning (2 October) by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and was "focused" on the major breakthroughs achieved in the field of laser physics, putting extremely small objects and incredibly fast processes in an entirely new light. And you do always wonder if it's real."As far as sharing it with Gerard, of course he was my supervisor and mentor and he has taken CPA (Chirped Pulse Amplification) to great heights so he definitely deserves this award".
