Melania Trump visits Malawi school on solo Africa tour

The United States First Lady, Melania Trump, yesterday paid a courtesy call on the Paramount Chief of Oguaa, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, who doubles as President of the Oguaa Traditional Council in the Central Region. Widespread bipartisan opposition to the steep reductions in Congress, where the budget proposals were essentially ignored, foiled the administration's plans.

"I am very proud to see the first lady", high school student Sharon Sibo told AFP after being among a group of welcoming pupils at the airport. The school has more than 8,500 students served by 77 teachers. "I was heartened to spend time with the students and was honored to donate school supplies and soccer balls". She is focusing the trip on her interest in child welfare. Malawi's education minister said the partnership had "significantly" improved student literacy.

Mrs. Trump watched several teachers conduct lessons for the equivalent of second- and third-graders. In southern Africa, the vocalization is often done as a celebratory welcome by women. "It is a lovely thing to see", Trump tweeted.

And two other white people had a "welcome to Malawi # notashithole!" sign.

A small handful of protesters held signs along roads in the capital Lilongwe, with one criticising President Trump's reported use of offensive language to describe some African countries earlier this year.

Another sign said "69 Days Past the Deadline to Reunite Families".

Mrs Trump is also expected to visit Kenya and Egypt.

Mrs. Trump opened her first extended solo worldwide trip on Tuesday in Ghana.
