Tom Hardy says his favourite scenes didn't make it into Venom

"Sorry to say that #Venom is pretty much a complete failure", wrote one critic.

There's no way to sugarcoat it: Hardly anyone is impressed with Venom. The script, by Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg, and Kelly Marcel, is painfully anemic whenever it isn't serving as a delivery system for symbiote-driven CGI, leaving the actors to improvise and react to developments and events that never bother to be tethered to reality, much less basic logic. With many concerned that filmmakers may have ditched some of Venom's most promising content, the British star has now readdressed his previous claims in an interview with IGN.

With Venom, Columbia is attempting to combine the strategies of Marvel Studios big-fun comic action and Fox's surprise Deadpool success, but without the savvy or vision of either studio. "It's noncommittally mediocre and, as a result, forgettable". What's here is so weird that I'm genuinely not sure if the writing team (a whopping four names are credited, further solidifying my initial assessment that this movie is a whole lot of different things smashed into one, like trying to piece together one of those 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzles while looking at the wrong picture) is intentionally going for laughs or have just failed miserably at creating an intriguing conflict whatsoever between Eddie Brock and the gooey blackness blob. They also said it is their #3 Marvel movie overall, only trailing Infinity War and Black Panther ticket sales.

As luck would have it, our man Eddie Brock turns out to be a solid host for the alien that calls itself Venom - and all of a sudden it feels as if we're in a slapstick comedy.

After he was asked what his favourite scene to film was, Tom gave the rather non-PR friendly line that his best scenes were "cut from the film", not holding back in showing his feelings towards the director's choice. Armitage also found fault with the film's pacing, which he felt was slow-as-molasses to start. And we get Venom.

Now, let's come to the movie, Venom.

Variety's Owen Gleiberman anxious in his review that Venom might end up being a "franchise kickoff that doesn't fully attain franchise liftoff", leaving Sony with a ton of work to do in crafting its planned Venom sequel. "Make no mistake: The effects can be dazzling". But Venom, the character, is so intimately connected to Spider-Man that he loses all definition in a world without his opposite number. "But to what end?" He flops around sets like a puppet on strings as Venom pulls him this way and that, and the stuttering, neurotic ticks in Eddie's voice make him a delightful presence to spend the bulk of the film with.

The 41-year-old actor wasn't shy about his support for the film, saying he's already hoping for sequels.

What works in Venom is Tom Hardy and the majority of the title character's portrayal.

Determined to prove that Drake is up to no good, Brock snoops around the Life Foundation lab in search of evidence and gets infected by a symbiote. Venom's humor and personality, which plays like a darker version of Spider-Man's corny dialogue mixed with Deadpool's incessant ramblings, is front and center in the film.

The movie contained two end-credits scenes with intriguing revelations.
