Mourinho: I’m victim of a ‘manhunt’

Grant SmithOct 08, 2018

Nobody has done more to undermine, expose or demotivate this United squad than Mourinho himself.

The game came amid media reports of Mourinho's future being on the line, with one paper saying he would be fired this weekend regardless of the Newcastle result - a claim denied by the club.

"He was exhausted in terms of nerves, he has chosen to take a sabbatical year and he won't go back on that", said Migliaccio, Zidane's long-standing agent.

"I don't think he will manage in England", Alain Migliaccio told Le Journal Du Dimanche.

Barely three minutes later, it was Jonjo Shelvey who collected a throw-in, his cross beating Eric Bailly's half-hearted attempt to clear and landing at the feet of Yoshinori Muto who evaded Young before turning to beat David De Gea.

The concern for United is that this is not new for Mourinho.

Zidane stepped down at the end of last season after two-and-a-half years in charge of Madrid, in which he won LaLiga, the Supercopa de Espana, two UEFA Super Cups and two Club World Cups as well as his European successes.

Mourinho may well have saved his job after the Red Devils came from two goals down to beat Rafa Benitez's side 3-2 thanks to three late goals.

So often criticised for preaching a cautious approach, it was only when Mourinho's men threw caution to the wind when 2-0 down that they began to look like the United of old.

After several good chances, United equalised through Anthony Martial in the 76th minute before Alexis Sanchez provided the victor in the 90th. 'They were not ready for this level of pressure that the manhunt is bringing.

Anthony Martial, at odds with the Portuguese this season, scored the equaliser and Sanchez, left out of the squad against West Ham last week, headed a 90th-minute victor. "Even older players commit mistakes that are not normal".

"I will say that today the victory is a pride victory".

"We created more chances to score more goals and that's a very positive sign".

"The boys woke up in the morning and didn't know if I was going to be here or not".

When his players return from global duty, Man United will face Chelsea and Juventus within three days.

Despite his reputation, Mourinho remains a popular and respected figure amongst his peers and Jokanovic insisted that if he will never speak a word against the Manchester United manager.

This time City could deliver the final nail in the coffin.
