Nathan Eovaldi, Luis Severino to bring the heat in Game 3 matchup

Grant SmithOct 08, 2018

If there is a pocket in the lineup that doesn't involve Gary Sanchez, this could absolutely be a scenario.

Three days before his scheduled start against the New York Yankees, Rick Porcello walked out to the Boston Red Sox bullpen and took a seat. The Yankees have certainly victimized other pitchers this season, but an inordinate number of them, nine in the regular season and two more Saturday night, have come against Price, in just 17 1/3 innings combined. "That's kind of what we've been waiting for to some degree, where he can take over a game on offense".

Price was 0-3 with a 10.34 ERA against the Yankees this season and 0-8 with a 5.74 ERA in nine previous postseason starts during his career.

The Yankees slugging centre fielder Aaron Judge, the second batter of the game, launched a solo home run and Gary Sanchez, the fifth NY player to the plate, led off the second with another round tripper. The Yankees' second batter of the game, Judge, crushed a home run to left-center field, at estimated 445 feet - Judge's third homer in three games this postseason. But on Saturday night, the player feeling the crush of those walls, and hearing the vitriol of the crowd, wore the home-white trousers and home-red jersey of the Red Sox.

It was the longest home run of the postseason - for about five innings. Sanchez's second homer was in same direction but sailed clean out of the park, onto Lansdowne Street. And that's exactly what happened at Fenway Park this evening.

In this one, Nathan Eovaldi will go for Boston opposite Luis Severino for the Yankees. "But a homer is a homer". He can even get away with mistakes, you know what I mean?

Sanchez, whose batting average didn't top.200 after June 8, also had a solo shot in the second inning to give NY a 2-0 lead.

Still, there's the question: Can the Red Sox win the World Series if Price doesn't pitch well?

The 2012 AL Cy Young Award victor - and two-time runner-up for the award - Price signed a seven-year, $217 million deal to come to Boston as a free agent before the 2016 season and has pitched like an ace at times in the regular season.

"Two places that are historic franchises where the fans are definitely rowdy for their home team and against the visiting team", Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes said.

Price, in his seventh different postseason as a starter with his fourth different team, has failed to do that too many times.

"I just talked to him and told him just be accountable".

Price said he didn't execute. "We like to hear that song sometimes when we win a big game". But I know I'm more than capable of winning games as a starter in October. "That's what I look forward to doing". He struck out four and walked one.

Tanaka wrapped up his outing with one run and four strikeouts scattered over five innings, and with the bullpen holding down the fort, the Yankees blew the game wide open in the seventh.

Both Sanchez and Severino have dealt with their struggles this season.
