Kavanaugh has denied all the accusations.

With Murkowski now presumably a "no" vote, Flake's "yes" is likely a prerequisite for Kavanaugh's confirmation.

A group gathered there Friday and fell silent when she announced her decision, CNN affiliate WGME reported.

A final vote on Judge Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court is expected on Saturday afternoon.

Democrats railed against the nomination in Senate floor speeches Friday night and Saturday morning, and protests opposing Kavanaugh are expected throughout the day on Saturday.

Collins, who had kept her vote close to her chest for the entirety of Kavanaugh's confirmation process, made the announcement in a lengthy speech from the Senate floor. But two key swing senators voted against their party colleagues: Republican Lisa Murkowski and Democrat Joe Manchin.

When Friday's procedural vote was over, Republican Sen.

In the United States judicial system, a judge of the Supreme Court is confirmed by the Senate for life.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, told reporters that the Senate Judiciary Committee's inability to attract Republican women might be caused by its heavy workload, a remark the panel's chairman tried to retract a few minutes later.

Mr Kavanaugh's nomination was left teetering on the edge after university psychology professor Christine Blasey Ford claimed in harrowing testimony last week that he tried to rape her when they were high school students.

The White House, McConnell said, "took some grief for a decision they didn't make" - referring to the scope of the FBI's background investigation into allegations that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted two women in separate instances decades ago.

The vote occurred shortly before 4 p.m.

Democratic senators don't want Kavanaugh to be a Supreme Court justice.

"I have been wrestling to really try to know what is fair and what is right", Murkowski said.

Republican Senator Susan Collins will vote to confirm Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination.

That would put the final tally at 51-49 in Kavanaugh's favor.

Hours before the undecided senators indicated their backing, the US Senate narrowly advanced President Donald Trump's nominee to a final vote by voting to end debate on the issue.

The vice president can vote in the event of a Senate tie. But Manchin said little Thursday and Friday to indicate what his final vote would be, after studying the Federal Bureau of Investigation report addressing allegations of sexual misconduct leveled against the nominee.

"I do hope it reminds us that we can take very small steps to be gracious with one another and maybe those small, gracious steps can lead to more", Murkowski said Friday in announcing her intent.
