Console gaming experience streamed to your phone — Microsoft’s Project xCloud

Nichole VegaOct 09, 2018

Xbox has formally revealed its Cloud gaming service. That time has now come and Project xCloud is official.

Microsoft isn't the first company to launch a video games streaming service, but Project xCloud being available on phones and tablets is quite unprecentended.

Of course, as ever with these sort of services, the result will not just depend on Microsoft's technology, network and data centers, but also the user's connection.

Similar to Google's Project Stream, Project xCloud will allow you to play pretty much any game on any device via streaming. To that end, Microsoft is making it as easy as possible for Xbox One game developers to adapt their content for Project xCloud with no additional effort.

It will also offer tools for developers who want to make their Xbox games available via Project xCloud.

Scaling and building out Project xCloud is a multi-year journey for us. Public trials for Project xCloud will begin in 2019.

"Our focus is on delivering an incredible added experience to existing Xbox players and on empowering developers to scale to hundreds of millions of new players across devices", the company said in a statement. Right now, it's about giving mobile gamers the same worlds and gaming experiences that you'll find on consoles and PCs, just beamed to smaller touch screens through the cloud - but it's not a stretch to imagine this being the backbone of a future console. This customised blade is capable of "hosting the component parts" of multiple Xbox One consoles. Each one of these custom blades will then be scaled and installed in Azure regions around the world ready for gamers in multiple different countries to utilise.

In the video above, a woman plays a console game on an Android phone (hard to be sure, but looks like a Samsung Galaxy S9) by connecting an Xbox controller via Bluetooth. There are times when its hard to even play a YouTube video on a smartphone, let alone stream a game like Red Dead Redemption or Call of Duty.

Cloud-based gaming is all the buzz at the moment.

Project xCloud will have the capability to make game streaming possible on 4G networks, Microsoft says.

As for other specifics, the tests are being run and working at a connection of 10 megabits per second, which is half the speed that Google's Project Stream requires. "Our goal is to deliver high-quality experiences at the lowest possible bitrate that work across the widest possible networks, taking into consideration the uniqueness of every device and network", notes the company.
