Flash floods in Spain's Mallorca kill 9, many missing

Torrents of brown water swept cars along narrow streets in the eastern town of Sant Llorenc late on Tuesday.

At least five people are believed to have died when torrential rainstorms deluged the town of Sant Lorrenc, about 40 miles east of the capital Palma, on Tuesday evening.

At least another 20 people were still missing after the downpours, local media reported, though emergency services would not confirm that figure.

The deputy mayor of the town, Antonia Bauza, confirmed to Cadena SER radio that two of the victims were British, while two others killed in the town were locals.

Footage broadcast of the floods showed cars being swept away by the rampaging flood waters and many people remain trapped in their homes following the heavy rain which hit the region.

The British Foreign Office says it's investigating reports that a British couple are among those people who've been killed. "We had to swim to try to survive".

Authorities said 80 soldiers and seven vehicles from the military's emergency unit had joined Wednesday more than 100 rescuers who had been working in the area overnight.

"In just two hours, some 180 litres of rain fell and we realized that we could not control the water", she said.

Two further victims died in the town of S'illot, authorities said. The flooding also affected phone communications, destroyed two bridges and forced the closure of 11 roads.

"My solidarity and support goes out to the families and friends of victims and all those affected by these tragic floods", Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez tweeted early on Wednesday.
