Jimmy Butler Practices With Timberwolves

Grant SmithOct 11, 2018

Wojnarowski reports that Butler at one point screamed at Layden, telling him, "You [expletive] need me".

The frenemies played Wednesday for the first time this offseason - Butler has been missing from training camp - in a session that reportedly included him teaming with the third-stringers to beat the starters and a verbal assault on Layden, the former Knicks GM.

The Miami Heat had made progress in trade talks with Minnesota last week and were pushing the Wolves to accept a revised trade offer for Butler, but proposed changes from Minnesota created a "breakdown" in negotiations, according to Marc Stein of The New York Times. The teams reportedly advanced to the point of exchanging player medical information, which is typically the last step of National Basketball Association trade negotiations.

So where do we stand in the Jimmy Butler trade saga seven days from opening night?

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Butler participated in drills and scrimmaged.

"Miami had softened on including guard Josh Richardson in versions of a possible deal for Butler, only to recoil once Minnesota pushed late for a sweeter return on the four-time All-Star, league sources said".

Forward Anthony Tolliver and guard Jeff Teague took a few Butler-related questions after practice, but neither would even fully confirm that Butler practiced. Coaches and players were largely speechless at Butler's tour de force throughout the workout, league sources said.

Despite Houston's alleged interest, trade discussions haven't advanced far due to Minnesota's asking price from the Rockets, which ESPN's Stefano Fusaro reported Wednesday. He dominated the gym in every way. He would become an unrestricted free agent after this season, and would likely get a five-year maximum contract from interested suitors.
