Kavanaugh confirmation disregards objections by the people

The overhaul legislation some Democrats are tentatively calling "H.R. 1" is three-pronged: imposing greater oversight on lobbyists, strengthening voting rights-including a measure that would create a national automatic voter registration system-and forcing greater transparency on donations to politically active organizations, including super PACs. Even so, the Trump administration issued its first-ever veto threat.

"People have to still get out and vote", president Trump urged. "But Republicans went on to gain control of the Senate in those elections and increase their majority in the House of Representatives". But, as Republicans struggle to hold onto the House - which is in danger of flipping in large part due to energized women voters in suburban districts that have turned on Trump - it could have an adverse effect.

Republicans defend short-term plans as a cost-saving option for Americans feeling the squeeze of higher premiums. And they don't have to provide comprehensive coverage.

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough said the Senate Judiciary Committee's hearings with Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's sexual misconduct allegations "were a disaster for the Democratic Party", as he believes it united moderate Republicans and President Donald Trump.

Unlike Obama's statute, the new policies don't require coverage for people with pre-existing conditions.

Grassley, who is a champion of congressional oversight, said a Democratic takeover of the House likely would lead to an investigation into Kavanaugh with the intention of impeaching him. "As I have often emphasized, it is essential that individuals who suffer from pre-existing conditions are covered. But when it comes to calls for violence and attempted murder and assassinations this country has gone too far and it's time we step back from that brink". "But I believe this flaw can be addressed without jeopardizing protections for individuals with preexisting conditions".

A tweet from Grassley, R- Iowa, on Thursday came just hours after the committee cleared eight more judicial nominees to the full Senate, and puts Democrats in a bind over whether to stay in Washington to fight the confirmations or head out on the campaign trail to defend vulnerable seats ahead of the midterms.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, an Alaska Republican who voted against her party to protect the Affordable Care Act in 2017, told CNN that she would not be supporting Baldwin's resolution.

Now, with Kavanaugh on the bench, Democrats seem to be the angry ones.

Confronting the prospect of a Democratic majority, Mr. Trump said, "we'll just have to fight it out, because there are a lot of haters, and they're just absolute haters". "Our constituents deserve more options, not fewer". "But I feel this is something we have to do". "There are better ways to do it", said Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn said in advance of the vote.

"No peace until they get their way?" he asked his fellow senators.

Following Justice Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court, Columbia and Barnard students have voiced their fear that Kavanaugh's example-including public hearings on his alleged misconduct as a teenager and college student-may perpetuate misunderstandings surrounding consent and discourage survivors from reporting sexual assault at Columbia. In a letter to the Senate Judiciary, his women law clerks wrote that he is one of the strongest advocates in the federal judiciary for women lawyers and the legal profession is a more fair and equal place because of him.
